Journey

Journey coverWhat's The Methodist Church really trying to do in its children's and youth work?

Church, Circuit, District and Connexion all have parts to play in making it successful, but how?

These two questions get practical answers in documents that will be coming to your church as part 2 of the Link mailing this month. Grants have helped us write and publish the MAYC Curriculum and the MethodistChildren Journey; each clarifies what we are trying to achieve and looks at how we can best succeed.

The worksheets at the end of the Journey will help groups of all ages use the booklet to be clear about the sort of things they want to do and how to get them done; the poster in the middle helps you keep in touch.

Halloween

Better than Halloween book coverOur friends at Church House Publishing have just published Better than Halloween which has been written by Nick Harding, Diocesan Children's Adviser in Southwell.

Penny read the book and shares her thoughts with us -

'This book offers resources and ideas to provide a fun packed alternative event at Halloween. It is full of games, ideas and suggestions for a Christian themed party.  The material is in an imaginative and accessible style suitable for use with children aged 5-11yrs.
It offers background information on the origins of Halloween and offers discussion ideas as to why many Christians choose not to celebrate Halloween. The material can be used as pick and mix to develop and execute a vibrant fun alternative event to Halloween celebrations.
A Bright Party offers an excellent opportunity to reach out into the community.
There are instructions and practical suggestions on how to run and plan an alternative party.  It provides a selection of supporting resources including photocopiable sheets, party invitations, posters, sheet music, A free colour CD-ROM of all supporting material is included.
The material is detailed and easy to use.'

Not only do we have FIVE free copies of the book to give away to e-news readers but we have also put together a new Halloween web page on the site for you to read up all about Halloween. Our thanks to those at Church House Publishing for this great giveaway!

JMA update

JMA Cartoon Rainbow and FUN mailing should be completed by the end of this week. We are very pleased with this issue and hope you and the children you work with enjoy it too. Do please let us know if you require more copies – we are trying to spread the word on mission education for children much wider than JMA collectors groups. If you are not on the list then you can download it from the JMA webpages

The move of JMA resources mailing from Methodist Church House to Methodist Publishing House has largely gone well. The turn round of orders seems to be quicker and orders are logged on the computer so that queries can be sorted out speedily. A reminder of MPH phone number – 01733 325002.

We do still have a small stock of the old-style badges so do please ring if your collectors still need these. They are not available from MPH.

We hope you are enjoying the newly designed 2006 material, including certificates, target chart, and promise poster, and that you find the ‘Give it Away’ all age worship order inspiring for your JMA service. We are always keen for any feedback on how things are working for you locally and any ideas on ways in which we could help further.

Bible Sunday

Bible Sunday is an annual opportunity for churches to celebrate the role of the Bible in worship and daily life. The Bible Society has produced a range of free resources to help churches mark Bible Sunday on 29th October or whenever works best for them.

The 2006 resources include an all age talk, prayers, activities, a sermon outline and interactive resources.

There is also help for churches preparing for activities commemorating the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act - 200 years after it became law on 25 March 1807 including a very useful 36-page information and study resource 'The Unchaining Word'.

CORE & Companions

Core coverAfter what seems like years of work and months of mentioning CORE in the e-news it is finally going to be launched this weekend at the CORE Skills Conference.
The book is back from the printers and can be purchased for £12.99 from good Christian bookshops from the end of the month or by visiting www.coreskillsforchurches.com

Another new publication that we will feature more heavily in next month's e-news is a new resource for Children's Workers being published by MPH. The resource is intended for using with small groups of children during Advent or Companions logosome other special church season. The book is a resource to help workers guide children on a spiritual journey and come complete with a cd-rom. The authors, Steve Pearce and Doug Swanney, say that this is a unique resource to the UK and Ireland and will offer a very alternative and exciting way to working with children in local churches. See the website for more information.
