Building Strong Towers

Strong Towers leafletUpcoming in March is a wonderful tour being organised by Scripture Union, the United Reformed Church, NCH, the Church of England, and MethodistChildren.
The tour is built around the SU publication 'The Strong Tower' which offers stories about children in the Bible who went through difficult times as well as resources and advice for those reading the book with children on how to deal with some of the issues children face today. The tour aims to build on this resource and will utilise the expertise of storytellers, NCH trained staff and SU Schools workers. Each evening will offer four workshops - How to tell Bible stories creatively and with interaction, How to use 'The Strong Tower' book and resources, How to support children who are bullied/life in school, and How to support children in families.
The Tour covers seven locations - Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Hillingdon, Cambridge, Darlington, Bristol, and Preston. The cost for the evening is £10 per person or £5 unwaged. Each event will have a resource marketplace and a bookstall.

So, Who is God? Did he make the world? Where did he come from? Does he ever go to bed? Why do bad things happen to good people?  This book for 8-10 year-olds encourages exploration of these questions and many more, either individually or in groups. The book contains brainteasers, memory verses and fascinating facts as ways of using the Bible and helping readers understand what knowing God can mean.

So, Why God?
Scripture Union

£9.99

This resource is especially suitable for use with children who are not part of a church community and can be used as a discipleship course. It’s ideal for groups of all sizes, aged 7-11. The sessions are split into two blocks of six and can be used with a midweek club or a one-off event.
The book takes questions asked by children about God and Christianity and uses them to create a journey that explores the answers by using the Bible and leaders’
testimonies.  The first six sessions look at who God is; the second six sessions look at issues facing Christians.  The book is full of ideas to explore the questions through games, discussion, craft and prayer.

Thanks to our friends at Scripture Union we have been able to obtain a few more copies of the Family Activity Organiser for 2007. These are a great resource and if you would like one then please drop us an e-mail at the usual address!

Child Evangelism Research

Research imageMark Griffiths is writing a doctoral research thesis on child evangelism with the University of Nottingham and needs your help.  He is looking for at least 50 churches that have children's outreach programmes - in keeping with the definitions below - who will be willing to answer 25 questions.  All you need to do is download the questionaire below and send it to him at markgriff@lineone.net.  The research, among other things, will allow us to form an overview of what works in child evangelism - in effect, what are the characteristics of the most successful projects.
His definitions are as follows -
Church based children's outreach projects (CBCOP) are those projects that exist primarily for the evangelism of children who would not otherwise attend church.
Child Evangelism within the context of this questionnaire is seen as the communication of the Christian gospel to children primarily, but not exclusively, through proclamation.

Request for help

Help imageWe have received an e-mail from Altrincham Methodist Church asking us this -
Could you let us know if you any information or any contacts of churches that have gone through the 40 days of purpose driven life experience.  Our church is about to do this course in March and we are trying to involve our children.  However the information and booklets that we have received through the course, we feel are inappropriate for our children, therefore we wondered if we could ask anyone else in the UK for their help and experience.
We don't know of anyone - do you? Could you please let us know at children@methodistchurch.org.uk

Did you have a Covenant Service that involved the children in your Church? If so, we would really like to hear about it as we trying to collect good ideas from around the Connexion. Please e-mail them to us at children@methodistchurch.org.uk

Communicating the Bible today: a conversation

Storykeepers imageSector minister, Brian D Brown, of the Oxford circuit, has since his retirement as Head of the Television Research Unit at the former Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University), devoted his ministry to communicating the gospels and other Bible stories to children on mainstream television. He spent over seven years devising and co-creating the ITV children’s hit The StoryKeepers and more recently has created another major series, the first 13 episodes of 39 of which were due to be released in the autumn/winter of 2006. Brian believes the time has come to explore with churches at district, circuit or local level the implications for our common mission of the issues he has encountered in creating these series. The discussions will centre on the biblical and theological issues raised by seeking to reach out to the biblically illiterate with stories from the New and Old Testaments. The concern is mission and with the Church’s outreach to the millions who may watch television but never meet to hear sermons. The objective is to begin a conversation to enable all to learn and to fulfil our calling to the world.
There will be a seminar at Methodist Church House in London on Thursday 25th January from 1300 to 1700. Contact Lindiwe Marimirofa for further information and booking.
