Welcome to the
February 2008
Children's Workers' newsletter. |
With the continued unrest in Western Kenya, The Methodist Church is seeking to respond to the needs of those displaced by the ongoing violence.
The Methodist Church in Kenya has called for £25,000 to help them support those suffering because of the widespread violence. The Methodist Church in Britain is sending £10,000 straight away, but is appealing for donations to cover the remaining need.
JMA wants to play its part in this. Can you help?
We already support mission partners, medical and children’s work in Kenya through our regular giving from JMA, but could you make a special effort of some sort in response to the appeal of our friends in the Methodist Church there?
If you can, please send in a cheque to the JMA office payable to ‘Methodist Fund for World Mission’ or, better still, use our justgiving facility and make your contribution online here
Kevin Fray, World Church Africa Secretary, says; “The situation in Kenya is very hard to comprehend, but what we do know is that people are in desperate need of shelter and aid. At the moment, the best support we in Britain can offer is through our prayers and donations.”

Children are Unbeatable!
We were contacted by the Children's Campaign Co-ordinator from CAU! who asked us to pass on this message -
Hello! I am Elinor and I work for the Children are Unbeatable! Alliance, which campaigns for equal legal protection against violence for children. My role is to facilitate the involvement of children and young people in the campaign, and I felt it was important to be in touch with you.
At the moment, there are many new and exciting opportunities to become involved, and I was wondering if you might be able to let children and young people you are working with know about them. Leaflets and information about it are attached. Please let me know if you would like paper copies.
I am also planning some visits to youth groups and other children's organisations to raise awareness about the campaign. Would your group, or a group you know of, who might be interested in a visit?

Bits n' bobs
Important Information
Dyke House Bromsberrow Heath, Ledbury, HR8 1PD
The above residential centre has in the past been used by church youth groups. MethodistChildren has been informed that the property and site are owned by someone who, in June 2007, was convicted of a sexual offence against a child staying at the site and therefore considers it an inappropriate centre for Methodist groups to use.
Independant Safeguarding Authority (ISA)
The ISA is planning a new series of Information Road Shows across the country to inform people about the ISA scheme and the latest developments. ISA tells us,
"These are planned to be a progression from our previous sessions, which many of you will have attended. At these sessions we will be giving more details about the way the ISA will operate and providing time for questions and answers. We strongly encourage employers and volunteer organisers to attend.
The first of these new sessions will be held in Brighton on the 7th Feb at the Holiday Inn Brighton Seafront. There are still places available on both the morning (10.00-12.30) and afternoon (13.30-16.00) sessions. To book onto this or any of the other sessions please visit our website at http://www.isa-gov.org/Default.aspx?page=28. "
From our friends at BRF
Very exciting... Please pass on the address to anyone you know, visit, sign in, help us to fill it with useful material, ideas, questions... and make sure your Messy Church is included in the directory if you're happy for people to know about it.

Autism
Churches of all denominations across Britain and Ireland are being urged to mark Autism Sunday and the International Day of Prayer for Autism and Asperger's Syndrome on Sunday 10 February 2008 and speak out on the suffering that parents, carers as well as the 433,000 adults and 107,000 children with autism and Asperger's Syndrome are undergoing as a result of inadequate public services in education, health, specialist speech therapy and respite care.
Ivan Corea said: "I believe faith communities have a huge role to play in reaching out to the socially excluded, the vulnerable and the down trodden. I would urge Churches to go out to the community and reach out to parents, carers and all people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome."
